Best Overall AR-15 Stock: B5 Systems Enhanced Sopmod

If I could only choose one AR-15 stock for the rest of my life, it would be the B5 Systems Enhanced Sopmod.

Whether I’m building a duty rifle, Recce rifle, general purpose AR, or even a competition focused “gamer gun” the Enhanced Sopmod is usually my default choice. That’s not because I think it looks cool, it’s because it consistently performs well regardless of the role of the rifle. I know I said there’s no one stock that does it all but this one is the only one that comes damn near close.

The biggest advantage of the Enhanced Sopmod is its cheek weld. Compared to traditional carbine stocks, the wider profile provides a noticeably more comfortable and stable shooting position, especially during longer range sessions or when running magnified optics. It’s one of those upgrades that you immediately notice the first time you shoulder the rifle.

Beyond comfort, the Enhanced Sopmod is packed with useful features. The integrated water tight storage compartments provide room for spare batteries, lube or even snacks, while the removable buttpad has a built in slot to keep a Multitasker M4 Tool on you at all times. It’s one of those small details you appreciate when you’re away from the bench and need to make an adjustment in the field. The stock also includes QD sling sockets and an ergonomic adjustment lever that is easy to manipulate without being overly bulky.

Runner-Up: Magpul CTR

The Magpul CTR came incredibly close to taking the top spot and remains one of the best AR-15 stocks ever produced.

Compared to the Enhanced Sopmod, the CTR is lighter, slimmer, and more compact. It also features Magpul’s friction lock system, which is the second lever that pops down when adjusting and at desired position you lock the lever back up enabling 2 spring loaded tensions that press against the buffer practically eliminating all wobble when locked. Which gives the CTR a noticeably tighter fit on the buffer tube, while the Enhanced Sopmod tends to have a slight play to it. It’s never been enough to bother me, but it’s definitely something you’ll notice if you’re comparing the two side by side.

Ultimately, the reason the CTR lost comes down to comfort and storage. While the cheek weld is surprisingly good for such a lightweight stock, it simply can’t match the comfort and versatility of the Enhanced Sopmod. And it doesn’t have the extra space for tools or battery’s, but if minimizing weight is your primary goal, I’d choose the CTR. For nearly everything else, the Enhanced Sopmod remains my top pick.

Best Budget AR-15 Stock: B5 Systems Bravo

This was another category that ended up being much closer than I originally expected.

I could have gone with one of the ultra budget options here, but honestly, none of them really impressed me enough to recommend. Instead, I bumped the budget up slightly to around the $50 mark, which left me deciding between two stocks: the B5 Systems Bravo and the BCM Gunfighter Mod 0 Sopmod.

In the end, the Bravo took the top spot.

The easiest way to describe it is as the little brother to the B5 Enhanced Sopmod. You lose the battery storage compartments and some of the bulk with smaller cheek welds, but it’s still a very comfortable, lightweight design, with excellent overall ergonomics. It manages to keep many of the things I love about the Sopmod while coming in at a much lower price point.

One feature similar to the Enhanced Sopmod is the storage under the buttpad to store a Multitasker M4 tool. Again it’s a small detail, but it’s one of those things you appreciate when you actually need it, which is more often then you would think.

For shooters looking for a comfortable, lightweight stock that doesn’t break the bank, the Bravo is hard to beat and continues to be one of my favorite recommendations for budget builds.

Best Lightweight AR-15 Stock: DoubleStar ARFX Skeleton Stock

When it comes to lightweight AR-15 stocks, my pick is the DoubleStar ARFX Skeleton Stock.

Unlike most of the stocks on this list, the ARFX is a fixed skeletonized design available in both A2 and Entry lengths. Personally, I run the A2 version on my 6mm ARC hunting rifle, but the right choice really comes down to your preferred length of pull and how compact you want the rifle to be. Another thing I like is that if you already have an A2 buffer tube, you can reuse it with the ARFX. If not, DoubleStar also offers complete kits that include the buffer tube just a little bit more money.

What makes the ARFX stand out is that it manages to keep weight to an absolute minimum without sacrificing comfort. Most lightweight stocks force you to give something up, whether that’s cheek weld, stability, or overall shooting comfort. The ARFX doesn’t.

On my lightweight 6mm ARC hunting AR build, I have the ARFX mounted using a Stern Defense RAB AD adapter, and it’s been an awesome setup. The lightweight design makes the rifle easier to carry through the woods all day while still providing a comfortable and consistent shooting position behind the scope. Personally, I think this is one of the best AR stocks for hunting builds because it keeps weight down without forcing you to sacrifice comfort or shootability.

A big part of that comes from the foam cheek pad. Anyone who hunts in colder weather knows how miserable it can be putting your face against freezing cold polymer, aluminum, or wood. The foam pad solves that problem while also providing a comfortable and consistent cheek weld. With a 1.5″ mount, everything lines up naturally every time I shoulder the rifle, making it easy to get behind the gun quickly and consistently.

Another feature I appreciate is the number of sling mounting options. The ARFX includes seven integrated QD mounting points, with five located near the buttpad and two more positioned toward the front of the stock near the receiver. This gives you plenty of flexibility regardless of how you prefer to run a sling.

The buttpad is also surprisingly comfortable, and because the stock is fixed, there’s no wobble, rattling, or movement on the buffer tube well because it is the buffer tube.

Best Minimalist AR-15 Stock: Reptilia RECC-E

The Reptilia RECC-E is one of the newest additions to my collection, but it didn’t take long for it to earn a spot on this list.

What immediately stood out to me was just how lightweight and streamlined the stock is. Reptilia did an excellent job removing unnecessary bulk while still keeping the stock comfortable and functional. Everything about it feels sleek and purposeful without looking overly futuristic or gimmicky.

The buttpad is noticeably thinner than many traditional stocks, but it’s decently comfortable and shoulders well. The adjustment lever is easy to grab and use, but I will say the stock was very stiff out of the box. Initially, it almost felt like plastic on plastic binding when adjusting the length of pull. After spending some time with it and manipulating the adjustment repeatedly, it smoothed out considerably and now feels much better than it did when new.

The RECC-E does have a lower cheek weld like the Doublestar ARFX. That’s the tradeoff for its minimalist design. With 1.5″ to 1.7″ optic heights, I found the cheek weld to be comfortable and consistent. On my low mass build I’m running an optic around the 2 inch height range, my cheek just barely touches the stock while looking through the optic more like my chin, but it still comfortable shouldering.

The RECC-E features integrated QD sling sockets on both sides of the stock, giving you flexibility for sling placement. There are no storage compartments or extra features here, but that’s entirely the point. This stock was designed to be lightweight, streamlined, and efficient, and it accomplishes exactly that.

For shooters looking for a modern minimalist stock that keeps weight and bulk to a minimum without sacrificing comfort, the Reptilia RECC-E is an excellent choice.

Best Precision AR-15 Stock: B5 Systems Precision Stock

When it comes to precision AR builds, the B5 Systems Precision Stock takes the cake. HANDS DOWN!

I know some people are going to say the Magpul PRS should win this category, but after spending time behind both, the B5 is a no brainer. Not only is it usually cheaper, but it’s the better overall stock.

The biggest reason is adjustability. You get 10 positions of adjustment for both the cheek piece and buttpad totaling a half inch of movement for each, along with three different cheek piece options to really tailor the fit to the shooter.

But what really separates it from the PRS is that the stock is still adjustable on the buffer tube. I can get the length of pull close using the buffer tube and then fine tune everything with the buttpad adjustment. That extra flexibility makes a huge difference when trying to get comfortable behind the rifle.

I’ve been running the B5 Precision on both my dedicated precision AR and my .308 AR-10, and it’s been excellent on both. It is definitely in the heavier stock world, but for a precision rifle I actually see that as a benefit. The added weight helps balance the rifle and can soften felt recoil when shooting heavier calibers.

The stock also features an MLOK slot on the bottom for accessories, along with fixed sling mounting points and steel anti rotation QD sockets.

One thing worth mentioning is the cheek piece selection. The short and medium cheek piece clears the charging handle even with the stock fully collapsed, which is why I run the medium on all of my precision rifles. The long cheek piece can interfere with the charging handle when fully collapsed.

Most Durable AR-15 Stock: Magpul UBR Gen 2

If durability is your number one priority, the Magpul UBR Gen 2 is the stock for you.

The UBR Gen 2 is the most stout AR stock I’ve ever used. The thing is an absolute tank. The moment you pick it up, you realize this isn’t your typical collapsible stock.

One thing that immediately impressed me was how smooth the adjustment mechanism is. Even right out of the box it’s incredibly smooth, especially compared to something like the Reptilia RECC-E which took some break in before it loosened up.

The cheek weld is excellent but when the buttpad is fully extended, your cheek ends up near the rear of the cheek weld slight downfall for those with long arms.

The UBR also features both QD sling sockets and fixed sling mounting points, along with a rear storage compartment. If you don’t need the storage, you can remove the compartment and leave it open instead.

Now for the downside it’s expensive and heavy. Much heavier than I expected the first time I handled one. If you’re building a lightweight rifle, this probably isn’t the stock for you. If you’re building a hard use rifle, GP rifle or just want the most durable stock possible, the extra weight becomes much easier to justify.

The added weight isn’t all bad though. Compared to lighter stock options, the UBR can help reduce felt recoil and improve overall rifle balance. It won’t reduce recoil like a muzzle brake, but the additional weight at the rear of the rifle can sometimes help recoil feel softer and more controlled during shooting.

One thing worth mentioning is to check the mounting hardware after your first few range trips. After installing mine and putting some rounds through the rifle, I noticed it had loosened slightly. Was it user error? Maybe. Either way, I retorqued everything and haven’t had an issue since. Better safe than sorry.

Best Fixed AR-15 Stock: Magpul Fixed Carbine Stock

This was probably one of the hardest categories for me to decide on.

I could have copped out and said the A2 stock because who doesn’t love one of them. It’s a classic and still works great today, but in the end I ultimately decided on the Magpul MOE Fixed Carbine.

Its extremely affordable and one of the biggest advantages is that it installs directly onto a standard carbine buffer system. If you already have a rifle with a collapsible stock, you can pull it off and install the MOE Fixed Carbine without having to swap buffer tubes or change the rest of your setup. Or you can get a carbine buffer and run an easily sourced carbine buffer system instead did messing with a A2 length.

Another reason I like it is the ability to customize the length of pull. Out of the box it’s compact and comfortable, but if you want a little more length, it’s compatible with Magpul’s PRS Extended Rubber Buttpad. That gives you more flexibility than most traditional fixed stock designs.

The stock itself is lightweight, comfortable, and does exactly what a fixed stock should do. It also maintains compatibility with accessories like the ASAP Plate and optional QD sling mounts if you want additional sling mounting options.

For shooters building a featureless rifle, ban state compliant rifle, or anyone who simply prefers a fixed stock, the MOE Fixed Carbine is hard to beat.

Best Bufferless AR Stock: Midwest Industries Alpha Stock

Bufferless AR builds are some of the most fun rifles you can put together. That’s because it kinda changes up the tradition AR build. Whether you’re running a BRN-180, Foxtrot Mike, PSA JAKL, or another bufferless upper, being able to ditch the buffer tube opens up a world of different stock options.

On my BRN-180 build, I’m running an ADM UIC-180 lower with the integrated rear picatinny rail section, and over the years I’ve swapped around quite a few different stocks. The one I keep coming back to is the Midwest Industries Alpha Folding Stock.

The cheek riser features four positions, the buttpad has five height positions, and the length of pull offers six positions of adjustment.

The polymer cheek riser is comfortable, the rubber buttpad does a great job, and most of the adjustments are quick and easy to make. The only downside is that adjusting the buttpad height requires an Allen key.

Of course, the biggest advantage is that it folds. If you’re building a bufferless rifle, I think a folding stock is a must. Being able to fold the stock and still be able to shoot the rifle is one of the best parts of these rifles.

The stock does carry a little extra weight at just over a pound, but the tradeoff is a solid, durable design that doesn’t feel flimsy. Has no rattles or loose parts and just an overall solid stock.

Runner-Up: F5 MFG ACR Stock

The F5 MFG ACR Stock was an easy choice for runner-up.

The F5 Stock is def the Best Stock for a PSA JAKL, and might honestly be the best looking option available. The iconic ACR styling has become a favorite among shooters for a reason, and the stock itself is excellent. The controls are easy to use, the folding mechanism is solid but does have a pretty firm release.

The reason it didn’t take the top spot is versatility. On rifles like the BRN-180 and traditional AR style bufferless builds, the stock sits a little taller than the top of upper receiver rail which looks slightly off to me. On the taller PSA JAKL upper though, the proportions look perfect and the stock feels right at home.

Best Wood AR-15 Stock: WOOX Vigilante

When it comes to wood AR stocks, the first company that came to mind was WOOX and their Vigilante line.

I have this stock on my newest build a .450 Bushmaster hunting AR, and it really gave the rifle a classic look and feel pair with their handguard and grip. The Vigilante combines a walnut lower section with an aluminum frame, giving you the classic look of wood without sacrificing the strength and durability expected from a modern AR stock.

The first thing that stands out is the craftsmanship. The walnut is absolutely beautiful and easily some of the nicest wood I’ve seen on an AR platform. Pictures don’t really do it justice.

Looks aside, it’s also a very functional stock. The buttpad is incredibly comfortable and honestly might be the most comfortable buttpad of any stock in this guide. The cheek weld is comfortable as well, and the stock has a snug fit on the buffer tube with very little movement or rattling. It’s not so tight that adjusting the stock becomes difficult, but it’s tight enough to feel solid.

The stock also includes MLOK slots on both sides, along with two integrated QD sling mounting points, making it surprisingly practical for hunting and field use.

I do have one complaint though and it’s the aluminum cheek piece. Most of the year it’s a non issue, but during late season hunting in colder weather that aluminum can get freezing cold against your face. It’s the only stock in this guide where I found myself noticing that and it’s definitely due to it being metal.

That said, the looks, craftsmanship, comfort, and overall performance more than make up for that small downside. If you’re looking for the best wood AR stock available, the WOOX Vigilante gets my vote.

B5 Systems Enhanced Sopmod vs Magpul CTR: Which Is Better?

If you’ve spent any amount of time around AR-15s, you’ve probably seen the B5 Enhanced Sopmod vs Magpul CTR debate. Both stocks have developed a loyal following, and honestly, for good reason. They’re two of the best AR-15 stocks ever made.

The biggest difference comes down to comfort versus weight.

The B5 Enhanced Sopmod offers a noticeably larger cheek weld, making it the more comfortable option, especially when running magnified optics or spending long days behind the rifle. It also includes storage compartments, room beneath the buttpad for a Multitasker M4 tool, and additional utility features that the CTR simply doesn’t have.

The Magpul CTR takes the opposite approach. It’s lighter, slimmer, and more compact while still providing a surprisingly comfortable cheek weld. The friction lock system also gives the CTR a tighter fit on the buffer tube with less movement than the Enhanced Sopmod.
