One in particular that caught my attention was the Brownells BRN-180 Gen 2 Upper. This complete upper receiver not only pays homage to the classic AR-180 design but also infuses modern engineering and versatility to meet today’s standards.
Why has the BRN-180 Gen 2 captured my interest? Firstly, the side charging feature on the AR upper is a standout. Beyond the side charging feature, I was particularly drawn to its design because it eliminates the need for a traditional buffer tube, allowing for the use of a folding stock when fitted with an adapter. In my setup, I used the American Defense Manufacturing UIC-180 billet lower, which features a Picatinny rail mounting option for the buttstock. At the core of the BRN-180 Gen 2′s design is its reliable and robust short-stroke gas piston system. This system minimizes fouling in the receiver, ensuring smoother and more consistent performance regardless of environmental conditions. The inclusion of an adjustable gas block further refines this system by allowing shooters to fine-tune the correct amount of gas flow for suppressed or unsuppressed shooting. Its also important to note this system does NOT require the standard AR-15 recoil buffer, spring, and receiver extension.
Handguard:

It locks in place with a single large screw, which provides ample locking force, ensuring that the handguard remains aligned and rigid, even during extended firing sessions. The BRN-180 Gen 2 comes equipped with an authentic AR-180 style three-prong flash hider, which not only reduces flash but also minimizes ground disturbance when firing prone. For those looking to customize their setup, the standard ½”-28 threaded muzzle accommodates a wide range of modern AR-15 muzzle devices, providing versatility for different tactical or competitive needs. But i’ll be keeping the original flash hider as I love the authentic touch.
Durability and Build Quality:
The durability and build quality of the Brownells BRN-180 Gen 2 16″ 223 Wylde Upper are immediately apparent upon handling. The coating on the upper is smooth and holds up well to regular range abuse. But i’ve found this is a pretty common occurrence with coatings in the past they don’t really like rocks too much. Yes I know maybe I should stop putting my rifles on rocks but at the same time when taking photos I gotta risk it for the biscuit. So I won’t hold this against the coating. Overall the construction feels solid with no play or cheap rattles, reinforcing the perception of a high-quality part.
Ergonomics and Aesthetics:
The ergonomics of the Brownells BRN-180 Gen 2 Upper are thoughtfully designed to enhance user comfort and handling. The handguard feels great in hand, offering a slightly thin profile that allows for a more secure and easier grasp. This design choice ensures that the upper is comfortable to hold and maneuver, especially during extended shooting sessions.
The side-charging handle works great and easy to grab. Its placement and ease of use allow for quick and efficient operation without disrupting your shooting stance or grip. Though I do think I may change it for a straight and a bit thicker charging handle. I can’t say for sure if i’ll like it better but I won’t know until I try it.
The upper is lightweight, weighing in at 4 lbs 10 oz, but feels well-balanced, reducing fatigue and making it easier to handle during extended shooting sessions. The combination of a well-designed handguard, lightweight design and its versatility of adding accessories, such as a folding stop and grip panels, makes the BRN-180 Gen 2 highly ergonomic and user-friendly.
Performance and Live Fire Test of the BRN-180 Gen 2
After the first 100 rounds, it was clear that the BRN-180 Gen 2 upper is top-tier. The recoil control is exceptional, and the muzzle stays fairly flat, making follow-up shots quick and easy. I experienced no jams, malfunctions, or any other issues, and this trend continued even after putting a few hundred more rounds down range. The upper feels very well balanced when paired with the ADM UIC-180 lower, enhancing overall handling and ease of use.
I did extensive testing with different types of ammo, including both 5.56 and .223, and both performed flawlessly. I experimented with a few different build setups to see how various optics would pair with the 16-inch upper. Initially, I used a Meprolight TruVision red dot, which was fantastic for rapid target acquisition and close to mid-range shooting. I then tried out the Sig Sauer Romeo5. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this sight, I felt it would have really shined with a shorter barrel. But I came to the conclusion this upper really needed something more.
In the end, I decided on a Swampfox Warhorse 1-6x LPVO, which truly showcased the BRN-180’s capabilities across different distances. This optic allowed me to test the upper’s performance from close quarters to long-range engagements. The groupings were consistently tight and accurate, proving the upper’s reliability and precision. After approximately 700 rounds (so far), I have yet to experience any hiccups or drops in performance. This upper has undoubtedly become one of my favorites to bring to the range, thanks to its smooth operation, reliability, and versatility. Whether you’re plinking at the range or engaging in more serious training, the BRN-180 Gen 2 delivers outstanding performance every time.
Installation and Compatibility of the BRN-180 Gen 2
Installing the Brownells BRN-180 Gen 2 16″ 223 Wylde Upper was a seamless experience. For this particular build, I chose the American Defense Mfg UIC-180 billet lower, primarily for its aesthetic synergy and functional ambidexterity which perfectly complements the upper. The ADM UIC-180 lower not only matches the BRN-180 Gen 2 in terms of quality and design but also enhances its versatility with features like the Picatinny rail at the rear, replacing the traditional buffer system. The only ISSUE with the ambi controls on the lower is that the ejection port door when open can get in the way of the ambi bolt catch. I didn’t have this problem as I don’t really use the ambi bolt catch but I can see how it could be annoying for some. One remedy and most common is to remove the ejection port door. Simple.

While specific 180 lowers like the ADM UIC-180 are ideal for maintaining the retro aesthetic and functionality of the BRN-180 design, the upper receiver is also fully compatible with any standard mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver. The choice to use a dedicated 180 lower was personal and wanting to keep it a genuine BRN-180 build.

While the price may be slightly higher than some basic uppers, it is justified by the superior build quality. Moreover, its compatibility with a wide array of AR-15 lower receivers enhances its value, allowing shooters to use existing parts or choose new components based on their specific needs. Build Quality and Durability: 4.5/5 The upper definitely feels high quality, using all premium metal parts that give it a sturdy feel. The coating holds up well, just doesn’t like rocks to much.
Performance and Reliability: 5/5 During my testing and after putting hundreds of rounds down range, I have yet to experience any type of malfunction or drop-off in performance. The muzzle stays flat, and the action is smooth.
Ergonomics and Handling: 4/5 The handguard feels great in the hand, is lightweight and feels very well balanced on the ADM UIC-180 lower. The only thing I might consider changing is the charging handle. While it works well, I find it a bit skinny and would possibly install a straight charging handle with a bigger knob.
Customization and Versatility: 4.5/5 The fact that you don’t need a buffer tube and can install a folding stock, and also FIRE the rifle with the stock folded, is awesome. Additionally, its versatility, being able to be installed on 180 specific lowers or AR-15 lowers, is a huge plus. The only minor issue is that when using an ambi lower, the ejection port door can cover the ambi bolt catch, making it tough to reach the release.
Value for Money: 5/5 With this upper coming in under $1000, it’s a huge bang for your buck in terms of the product you are receiving. It’s a unique side-charging AR upper that can be used with a folding stock and doesn’t lack in performance, reliability, and build quality.
