Burris RT-6 Tactical Kit Review – Best LPVO Setup Under $800

Putting together an LPVO with a mount and backup red dot can easily run well over $1,000, but Burris takes a different approach with the RT-6 Tactical Kit. Everything comes in one box, the RT-6 LPVO, their P.E.P.R. mount, and a FastFire 3 red dot sitting on top for well under $1,000. In this review, I’ll walk through the setup, build quality, and performance to see if this kit really delivers on value or if it cuts corners to hit the price.

The Burris RT-6 Tactical Kit is designed to give shooters a complete LPVO setup straight out of the box. It includes the RT-6 (1–6×24), Burris’s P.E.P.R. mount, and a FastFire 3 red dot mounted in a piggyback config. Instead of piecing together components from different brands, this kit delivers a ready to run package that covers both close range speed and mid-range precision.

The RT-6 itself is compact, lighter than many optics in the same class, and built around a true 1x low end. The 6x magnification lets you stretch out for longer shots, while the Ballistic 5X reticle gives practical holdovers out to 600 yards. Burris also integrates a throw lever for quick magnification changes and includes 11 brightness settings for the illuminated reticle.

Key Features

Compact Design

The RT-6 is shorter and lighter than many 1–6 scopes in its class. That smaller footprint keeps your rifle balanced and fast-handling.

Ballistic 5X Reticle

Burris’s Ballistic 5X reticle gives a broken center circle for quick target acquisition, along with holdover marks that let you push out to 600 yards. It takes a little getting used to, but it’s functional once you learn it.

True 1× Magnification

At the low end, the RT-6 gives you a true 1x for reflex style shooting, fast and natural for close quarters work.

Throw Lever

The integrated throw lever makes magnification changes quick and smooth. It’s one of those simple features that adds real value when you’re under time pressure.

Reticle Illumination

The illuminated reticle has 11 brightness settings on a rotary dial. It’s not as bright as a dedicated red dot, but it’s effective in most lighting conditions.

Design & Build Quality

The finish on the RT-6 looks great, and the machining on the mount is perfect. Glass is clear no glare, distortion or fuzziness. The reticle brightness knob is firm and smooth, no play, not mushy and the detents feel great. Turret caps thread on and off easily the threads themselves are smooth and solid.

The windage knob has a tactile feel with slight audible clicks and zero play. the markings and numbers are easy to read and use. The elevation knob feels the same and the numbers/lines are crisp, only problem is visibility with the FastFire 3 mounted on the rear ring cap. With the FastFire on the rear, you’ll end up breaking cheek weld and peeking over or around the dot to see elevation markings. Moving the FastFire to the front ring cap (Burris includes an extra plain cap and a pic-rail cap) will solve that issue. I normally prefer it up front anyway but for this review I left it in Burris’s configuration.

The magnification ring is firm and smooth, the included throw lever is one of my favorite value items on this kit. I’m a big fan of factory included throw levers and one being on this budget friendly kit is a huge plus. It makes power changes fast and intuitive, but also looks great flowing very well with the design of the scope.

The FastFire 3 itself is clear, it’s nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done. The hood is a little thin. My rifle tipped and hit the top of the hood, slightly bending it. Burris includes a plastic enclosed cover for the FastFire which doubles as protection, just not my favorite look. It doesn’t looks bad just not for me. Even with the hood slightly bent the dot still performed perfectly and showed zero issues and held its zero perfectly fine which is huge. The hood’s thinness is worth noting if you’re rough on gear.

Lastly, my kit arrived assembled but two ring cap screws fell out and actually found in the box. after reinstalling those screw i found most of the ther screws and red dot were also loose. Make sure you Double-check all screws before shooting. After re-leveling the optic and tightening everything down the mount felt rock-solid.

Performance

Zeroing the RT-6 went flawlessly, the clicks are true 0.5 MOA and the turrets felt great and consistent. Glass is clear and the reticle is easy to pick up, but it lives mostly in the center of the glass (no full crosshairs), so the sight picture of the reticle itself does feel a touch small compared to other LPVOs i’ve used. the hold overs worked well out past 400 yards. the reticle is a bit small but its easy enough to read but can feel a hair cluttered when pushing the scope out past 500 yards

Eye relief is pretty forgiving which is impressive for a scope in this price range. I would say you get about 1 inch of forgiveness. After about 500 rounds on my PSA JAKL build the zero held perfectly turret caps and ring caps stayed tight and the mount remained solid retightening the screws.

The magnification ring is a bit stiff out of the box and can jerk the rifle when adjusting, but the included throw lever is a game changer giving you a little more leverage and grip. After some time out on the range I did notice the ring to be a bit easier and smoother or I got more used to it and wasn’t jerking the rifle nearly as much.

My biggest practical gripe is the FastFire 3 on the rear ring, it blocks easy access to the elevation markings. You end up breaking cheek weld and peeking around the dot to see what click you’re on, not great under time pressure unless you’ve got a perfect memory of clicks. Fortunately Burris includes a plain cap and a pic-rail cap so you can move the FastFire to the front ring with ease, which is how I’d run it going forward. Front ring placement fixes the elevation visibility issue and keeps your cheek weld intact.

Its accurate, durable, and lightweight. Not perfect, but it ran flawlessly for what it’s built to do, held its zero, turrets ease to manipulate and holdovers worked awesome out past 400 yards.

Reliability & Performance – 4.5 / 5

Zeroing was flawless with consistent and true 0.5 MOA adjustments. After 500 rounds the RT-6 held zero without issue, the turrets stayed tight, and the mount was rock solid once screws were properly tightened.

Sight Picture – 4 / 5

The glass is clear, illumination works great and reticle is clean. The reticle can feel a bit crowded past 500 yards but it’s a damn impressive package to say the least. The eye relief is forgiving as well.

Build Quality – 4.1 / 5

The finish is sharp, the turrets and brightness knob feel great, and the throw lever (my favorite part) adds great usability. The mount is solid once tightened down, though the out of box loose screws and the thin hood on the FastFire 3 hold it back slightly.

Ergonomics – 4 / 5

Controls are intuitive and easy to use, with the throw lever making magnification changes easy. The mag ring is stiff at first and can nudge the rifle if cranked too fast. The rear mounted FastFire complicates elevation adjustments, but moving it forward fixes the issue.

Value – 4.6 / 5

For under $800 you get a full kit. The scope, mount, and red dot, backed by Burris’s Forever Warranty. It’s a ton of value for the money and one of the strongest selling points of this package. Can often be found for $600 at MidwayUSA, Brownells or Optics Planet.

Final Thoughts

The Burris RT-6 Tactical Kit is exactly what it claims to be: a complete, ready to go optic package that gives you a lot of capability for the money. Well, almost ready to go after a quick screw check. I’ll be honest, going into this review I wasn’t sure what to expect from a budget friendly complete setup, but I can confidently say I’m impressed. It’s compact, clear, and reliable, with controls that feel solid and high quality.

Now the Ballistic 5X reticle isn’t my favorite, it’s a bit small in the sight picture and can feel busy for longer-range shooting, but it works and gets the job done. The included P.E.P.R. mount and FastFire 3 add real value, though I recommend moving the red dot to the front ring for better usability.

For under $800, you’re getting a scope that holds zero and feels like it can take a beating without letting you down. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be. If you want a kit that feels solid, runs reliably, and gives you both speed and mid range reach without draining your wallet like most LPVO/red dot setups can… the RT-6 is for you.
