After thousands of rounds and a lot of trigger time, we narrowed it down to the best of the best across multiple categories.

Hands-On Testing Process

We didn’t just pull spec sheets and call it a day, every trigger on this list was put through a full hands on test.

• Installation: We started by installing each trigger on standard AR-15 lowers, checking ease of install and fitment.
• Trigger Weight: Using a trigger pull gauge, we measured the actual pull weight to see how it compared to the manufacturer’s advertised numbers.
• Round Count: Every trigger was tested with at least 250 live rounds, and most surpassed 750 rounds over the course of testing.

During live fire and dry fire sessions, we focused on the factors that matter most to shooters:

Best Bang for Your Buck – LaRue MBT-2S

The LaRue MBT-2S is hands down the best value trigger on the market. When it first launched at $250, shooters were already comparing it favorably to the Geissele SSA. Once LaRue dropped the price to $115, it became a no brainer upgrade for my but often overlooked by others.

It comes in a sleek cylindrical display box and installs cleanly with no fitment issues. It’s a true two stage trigger with a distinct wall, smooth pull, and a crisp break that’s predictable and consistent every single time. My three trigger pull readings averaged to about 4.45 lbs, which is close enough to its advertised 4.5 lbs. While this particular trigger has the lowest round count in testing with only about 250 rounds (it’s installed in a fresh build), it’s been nothing but reliable and consistent so far.

Compared to the competition, the MBT-2S feels extremely close to the Geissele SSA at less than half the price. The SSA may have a slight edge in refinement and long term duty pedigree, but the MBT-2S delivers nearly the same shooting experience for just over $100. LaRue even includes a heavier spring to bump the weight to 6 lbs, but the 4.5 lb setup is what I like to run.

Best All-Around Trigger – Geissele SSA

If you want one trigger that works for everything, the Geissele SSA is it. This is probably one of the most well known triggers on the market or atleast I like to think so.

The SSA comes packaged cleanly in a display box and installs with zero issues. My three trigger pull readings averaged 4.5 lbs, falling right in the middle of its advertised 4.25–4.75 lb range. On the range, the trigger is incredibly predictable, with smooth travel, a solid wall, crisp break, and a short tactile reset. There’s not to much take up, and it runs fast when you need it to without ever feeling unsafe or too light for duty use.

Compared to the LaRue MBT-2S, the SSA edges it out in refinement and proven track record. It’s just as duty oriented, which makes it ideal for rifles that absolutely must go bang when it counts. That said, shooters on a budget will find the MBT-2S delivers an almost identical feel for far less money.

Best Duty Trigger – TriggerTech Duty

This one genuinely surprised me. I was convinced this spot was going to the Wilson Combat TTU, but after testing the TriggerTech Duty 3.5 lb two stage, I completely changed my mind.

The Duty is a drop-in unit that’s non adjustable and ridiculously easy to install. Fitment was perfect, and it features TriggerTech’s textured trigger face, tiny serrations you barely notice, but they give excellent grip, which is exactly what you want in a duty application where things can get high stress or wet.

The trigger is rated at 3.5 lbs and came in just slightly high on my gauge, averaging 3.75 lbs across three pulls. But it’s the feel that really sold me. Take up is minimal, the wall is solid, and the break is firm in the best possible way. The Wilson TTU I tested has a very slightly softer break, which is why this took the duty trigger highlight. In high stress environments, a firm, deliberate break is key to reducing the chance of accidental discharges.

The reset is extremely short and positive, and TriggerTech’s Zero Creep technology does exactly what it promises, the break has zero creep and feels awesome. You might assume you’d want a heavier pull for a duty trigger, and I honestly expected to agree. But this 3.5 lb break feels perfect because of how crisp and firm the break is. It’s exactly what I want in a duty driven rifle trigger now.

Compared to the competition: The TriggerTech Duty takes the crown over the Wilson Combat TTU because of that firmer, more deliberate break, cleaner reset, and truly creep free feel. The TTU is excellent, but the Duty edges it out in the areas that matter most for a duty application.

Best Hybrid/Speed Trigger – Geissele SD3G

First, let’s start off with what a Hybrid trigger actually is… It’s a trigger that’s a cross between a two stage and a single stage design, offering the speed and feel of a single stage while still maintaining the safety and robustness of a combat grade two stage.

The Geissele SD3G is my go to choice for a run and gun style rifle where fast target engagement and quick follow up shots are the priority. Like the SSA, it comes packaged in a Geissele branded display box and installation was straightforward with flawless fitment. I installed the lighter spring (advertised for a 3–4 lb break), and my pull gauge readings averaged about 3.8 lbs, which puts it right at the higher end of spec.

The SD3G features a flat faced trigger shoe and feels extremely light and smooth in operation. There’s almost no take up, and the pull itself is very short. It has more of a rolling break than a hard wall but if you’re gentle enough, you can feel where the wall would be or where that roll starts, but it’s very subtle. The reset is extremely short and followed by another light crisp and smooth break, making it perfect for fast paced shooting where split times matter.

Use case: This trigger shines in dynamic shooting environments, 3 Gun competitions, or range days where speed is the goal. It’s not really designed for benchrest or precision style shooting, but for run and gun builds, it’s one of the best triggers you can buy IMO.

Best Competition Trigger – TriggerTech Diamond

The TriggerTech Diamond is about as close to “fully loaded” as a single stage AR trigger gets. Fully adjustable from 1.5 to 4 lbs, it’s built for competition shooters who demand the lightest possible break with absolute consistency. Installation was effortless, it’s a drop-in unit with zero fitment issues and 2 snug down screws to keep the trigger unit from having any play. Adjusting the pull weight is as simple as breaking the action and looking down from the top of the lower Reciever there’s a screw used to make that adjustment.

On the range, the Diamond did not disappoint. The break is crisp and glass like, and the reset is short and positive. It features TriggerTech’s Zero Creep™ Technology and hardened stainless steel internals, which gives it an extremely clean pull with zero grit and the confidence that it’ll hold up for thousands of rounds.

Adjusting the pull weight is simple. I tuned mine to a 2 lb break for competition, and it’s effortless to run at speed while still having plenty of control. Overtravel is extremely minimal, and the reset is so short it’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.

Compared to the competition: The Geissele SD3G is still a fantastic trigger for run and gun or 3 Gun builds, and it remains one of the fastest hybrid triggers you can buy. But the TriggerTech Diamond edges it out for pure competition use with its ultra light adjustability, zero creep, and razor thin reset. If your goal is absolute precision, the Diamond is the trigger to beat.

Best PCC Trigger – Timney AR Pro

The Timney AR Pro is not specificly built for pistol caliber carbines, but it feels like it was. This 2 lb single stage trigger completely transforms the feel of any PCC build, delivering a light, clean break with the kind of consistency you want when running blowback operated platforms hard.

Installation was classic Timney, simple, drop-in, and zero fitment issues. Once installed, the break was crisp and predictable, with almost no take up and a positive reset. My pull gauge averaged right on spec at 2 lbs, making it one of the lightest triggers in this entire roundup along side the Triggertech Diamond. Only this one isn’t adjustable. Despite the light weight, it never felt unsafe or “too light,”.

Use case: The Timney AR Pro is perfect for PCC shooters looking for precision and speed. Whether you’re running USPSA, Steel Challenge, or a dedicated 9mm AR at the range, the AR Pro’s light break and short reset help you move faster between targets and stay on pace with competition level split times.

Compared to the competition: While the TriggerTech and Geissele options i like better in heavier use carbines and rifles, the Timney AR Pro is the clear winner for pistol caliber carbines. Its ultra light break and smooth reset make it the perfect companion for fast, accurate PCC work.

Honorable Mentions

Wilson Combat Tactical Trigger Unit (TTU) – Runner-Up Duty Trigger

The Wilson Combat TTU, I feel is slept on by many but a top choice for me and for good reason. It’s a fully enclosed, drop-in 4.5 lb trigger unit, built for duty driven rifle and has amazing reliability. Installation is effortless, and the sealed design keeps out dirt and debris, a huge advantage for hard use rifles.

On the range, the TTU is smooth, predictable, and consistent. The break is clean with a defined wall, the reset is short and tactile, and it’s incredibly durable over the long haul. While the TriggerTech Duty narrowly edged it out as our top duty pick (due to a firmer break and creep free feel), the TTU remains a rock solid choice that you can trust in any environment.

American Trigger AR Gold (ATC) – The Gucci Build Trigger

If you want a trigger that looks just as good as it performs, the American Trigger Company AR Gold is hard to beat. The gold anodized trigger shoe makes it perfect for a “Gucci build,” but this drop-in trigger isn’t just about looks, it absolutely performs.

The ATC has minimal take up, an incredibly crisp break, and a short, positive reset. It’s up there with one of the smoothest single stage triggers we’ve tested, making it a great option for shooters who want both speed and precision while looking flashy.
