Choosing the right stock for a bolt-action rifle is a critical step for both performance and comfort, whether you’re upgrading an existing rifle or starting a new build from scratch. The Grayboe Phoenix 2 is designed to meet the needs of all shooters, promising a balance of functionality and quality. With its recent introduction, the Phoenix 2 aims to appeal to both the competitive shooter and enthusiasts looking to enhance their rifle setups. In this review, we’ll dive straight into its design, features, and real-world performance to assess how well it holds up.
Choosing the Right Stock for Your Bolt-Action Rifle
Selecting the right stock is key for any shooter aiming to enhance their rifle’s performance, feel, and aesthetic. When browsing stocks, there are several factors to consider:
- Comfort and Ergonomics: A well-fitted stock should provide a comfortable hold and encourage stable shooting positions.
- Adjustability: Adjustable stocks provide flexibility for various shooting styles and environments. Features like a cheek riser, length of pull adjustments, and compatibility with accessories are valuable additions for customization.
- Material and Weight: The stock material impacts durability and weight. While aluminum chassis stocks provide stability and ruggedness, many shooters prefer synthetic or composite materials for their lightweight design and reduced recoil impact.
- Aesthetics: Appearance is often a significant consideration for those wanting a stock that complements their rifle’s overall look. Factors like design, color and finishes add a personal touch.
- Action Compatibility: Ensuring the stock is inletted for your specific action is essential for proper function and fit.
After weighing these options, I picked the Grayboe Phoenix 2 for my build. My primary goal was to have a stock that looked great and lightweight, but with a comfortable grip and some adjustability, specifically an mlok or Arca rail and an adjustable cheek riser, which are essential features for me. Additionally, I needed it to be inletted for a Stiller Predator action, and the Phoenix 2 has a huge list of action capabilities and the Stiller Predator was one of them.
For the finish, I went with the ATACS AU hydro-dipped coating, it looks great but I’m not sure how well hydro-dipping holds up but I’ll find out soon. This coating has since been discontinued as an option. Lastly I also wanted a stock that didn’t break the bank. This combination of features and requirements made the Phoenix 2 an ideal choice for my setup.

Here’s a few key features that make this stock stand out.
Adjustable Cheek Piece
A proper cheek weld is crucial for consistent accuracy, and the Phoenix 2’s adjustable cheek piece allows shooters to fine-tune their alignment with ease. Offering 1 inch of vertical adjustment, this cheek piece can be secured in place with a quick-adjust knob and flush mount set screw. This feature ensures stability in various shooting positions, helping shooters maintain a consistent sight picture.
Lightweight Design
Weighing approximately 39 ounces, the Phoenix 2 balances strength and portability. The lightweight build makes it an excellent choice for extended shooting sessions or hunters, reducing fatigue while still providing the stability needed for precise shots.
Integrated M-LOK Rail
Equipped with a single-piece M-LOK rail, the stock allows for the easy addition of accessories, such as bipods or tactical slings. The M-LOK system includes two quick-detach (QD) sling attachment points, providing versatility and customization for various shooting scenarios.
Multiple QD Flush Cups
To accommodate different shooting styles, the Phoenix 2 includes several flush cup sling mounts. With two flush cups on the left side, two on the right side, and one on the bottom of the buttstock, shooters have multiple options for sling placement and making it suitable for both left- and right-handed users.
Grayboe G Lite Recoil Pad
The 1-inch Grayboe “G Lite” recoil pad enhances comfort by reducing felt recoil. This feature is especially beneficial during extended shooting sessions, as it helps minimize shoulder fatigue and allows for better control of follow-up shots.
Vertical Grip
The Phoenix 2 is designed with a vertical grip angle, providing a natural hold that promotes stability and control. This ergonomic feature is ideal for precision shooters, as it allows a relaxed hand position that reduces strain and improves handling during long sessions.
Universal Inlet Compatibility
Built for flexibility, the Phoenix 2 is compatible with a wide variety of bolt-action rifles, particularly Remington 700 clone actions. It supports barrel contours up to 1.250 inches, making it a suitable choice for various custom builds and calibers, adding to its appeal for a range of shooting applications.
Design and Build Quality
From the moment I picked up the Grayboe Phoenix 2, I could tell it was built with quality in mind. The stock is definitely lightweight, yet feels solid and durable. The forearm of the stock really hit sweet spot for me, it’s not too wide or too slim. The indents on each side give it an awesome grip, making it feel comfortable and secure in the hand. I did add a full length arca rail to the bottom utilizing the MLok rail which fit perfectly. It’s sturdy and locks in without any play.
The finish I chose is the hydro-dipped ATACS AU Camo, which looks fantastic. While it isn’t the toughest finish out there and can scratch when bumped into things, it definitely gives the rifle a sharp, unique look.
The overall design just feels like it belongs against my shoulder. The 1-inch recoil pad plays a huge factor in adding comfort and a secure fit. Also the length of pull can be adjusted from 12.5” to 13.5” by adding or removing spacers from the Buttstock. The cheek riser is well-designed too. The adjustment knob is high-quality and easy to use, and the riser has just enough surface area for a comfortable cheek weld without being bulky. Plus there’s just enough room to remove the bolt without needing to adjust the riser, which is a nice touch.
The stock is equipped with five QD mounts, giving plenty of options for a sling setup. There are two on each side of the stock and one on the bottom of the buttstock, so you can set it up to your liking.
For the bottom metal, I opted for the Grayboe M5 DBM. It’s high-quality, with a clean finish that fits perfectly in the stock, adding to the overall fitment.
On-Range Performance
I’ve been really impressed with how this stock performed on the range. The Grayboe “G Lite” recoil pad does an amazing job soaking up recoil, it makes shooting all day so much easier on the shoulder. The vertical grip angle feels just right and gives me a solid, comfortable hold. The cheek riser is super easy to adjust. Once I got it where I wanted it, it stays locked in place without any shifting or loosening, keeping my sight picture consistent.
The stock itself feels rock-solid. There’s no flex at all, giving the rifle a really stable platform. Plus, it’s lightweight, which makes the whole setup easy to handle and maneuver, whether I’m at the range or out hunting walking through the woods. The forearm of the stock is flat and wide perfect for resting on surfaces but also not to wide making it very comfortable to hold.
As for the finish, it’s held up okay, but it did pick up a couple of scrapes from bumps and regular use. I noticed some wear on the optional full-length Arca rail too, especially from mounting it on and off a tripod a few times. Metal-on-metal wear is kind of expected, but it’s something to be aware of.
Overall, I’m really happy with how this stock performed. It not only makes the rifle feel great but also looks great. For what I wanted, the Phoenix 2 has delivered across the board.
Price vs. Value
The Grayboe Phoenix 2 offers excellent bang for your buck. Starting at $650, it provides a lot of value in terms of quality, features, and performance. With additional options like a detachable bottom metal (DBM), the price typically sits around $850, which is still very reasonable considering what you’re getting. Compared to other brands that can easily push over $1,000, the Phoenix 2 stands out as a well-built, budget-friendly option that doesn’t compromise on functionality or design. For the price, it’s hard to beat the quality Grayboe delivers with the Pheonix 2 IMO.

This stock is very solid and durable, giving the rifle a stable platform. It feels rock solid, but I do think the finish could be a bit more durable to resist scratches and wear. Overall, though, it’s built to last and feels high-quality.
Ergonomics: 4.8/5
The stock just feels great. It’s not too wide, not too thin, and the foregrip with the indents feels awesome in the hand. The 1-inch butt pad does an amazing job at absorbing recoil, making it comfortable to shoot all day. The grip angle is perfect and feels natural.
Adjustability: 4.4/5
The Phoenix 2 has solid adjustability with the added cheek riser. It would be even better if it had an quick adjustable butt pad, but you can still adjust the length of pull using spacers on the Buttstock and lets be real once it’s set it’s better off not touched.
Options: 4.6/5
This stock comes with a ton of options. There are plenty of action inlets, loads of QD flush cup, an M-LOK rail, and multiple color and camo choices. You can also add a colored butt pad, DBM, magazine, Arca or Picatinny rail, and even a bipod. It pretty much has every option you’d want to pair with a stock.

Starting at $650 and averaging around $850-$900 with added extras, this stock is an awesome value. For the quality and features you get, you really can’t beat it. Amazing bang for your buck.

Final Thoughts
The Grayboe Phoenix 2 has really delivered on everything I wanted, it’s lightweight, durable, and gives my rifle a rock-solid feel. The ergonomics are spot on, with a comfortable vertical grip and buttstock that makes it easy to shoot all day. The cheek riser is perfect at its job keeping your sight picture consistent. With plenty of customization options like inlets, QD mounts, and finish choices, this stock lets you set it up exactly how you want. While the finish could be a bit tougher, that’s a minor trade-off for a stock that looks and performs this well. For the price, it’s hard to beat the value you’re getting. If you’re looking for a high-quality, well-built stock that enhances both performance and aesthetics, the Phoenix 2 is definitely I would recommend.
