Let’s dive into the details and see if this upper lives up to its legendary roots.

The M16A2 and Its History

The M16A2 is a cornerstone of modern military history, representing the evolution of the original M16 rifle, first deployed during the Vietnam War. Adopted by the U.S. military in the 1980s, the M16A2 introduced a number of enhancements aimed at improving accuracy, durability, and handling. These upgrades included a heavier barrel profile for better heat management, a tiny bit longer stock, a newly shaped handgaurd and improved iron sights. Perhaps most notably, the M16A2 featured a three-round burst mode to increase control during rapid engagements.

Designed with input from Marines who had used earlier versions in the field, the M16A2 quickly became the standard issue for many branches of the U.S. military, serving faithfully for over two decades. Its 20-inch barrel length and rifle-length gas system contributed to its reputation for long-range accuracy and reliable function in diverse conditions. The M16A2’s design influenced many later rifles, setting a standard that still resonates with the industry today. For those who appreciate the blend of classic military styling and reliable performance, the M16A2 holds a special place, making reproductions like the Brownells BRN16A2 upper highly sought after.

First Impressions and Build Quality

After unboxing the Brownells BRN16A2, I found exactly what I expected an identical M16A2 replica upper. It features the classic bayonet lug, sling mounts, correct handguard, a one-piece carry handle upper receiver, and the proper iron sights. The weight is typical of a 20-inch upper, kinda heavy. But again this is a retro upper not a high end lightweight precision ar upper

The fit and finish of this upper looks great. All parts are tightly assembled, with no rattles (besides the sling loop) or gaps, and the coating is flawless, much nicer than other finishes i’ve seen in the past from other uppers. The rear sight adjustment knob is notchy with spaced, firm clicks that hold position well.

When pairing it with my Anderson Manufacturing Complete A2 Lower, the fitment was just right. It wasn’t the tightest fit, but there was minimal play exactly what you’d expect in a retro build. While most AR builds I’ve done focus on tight tolerances and smooth operation, with this one, I found myself appreciating a more rugged character. Even so, this upper exceeded those expectations, blending the authentic look of an M16A2 with the benefits of modern machining and finishing. Brownells really nailed it with this upper, offering a perfect balance between classic styling but with modern finishes and machining.

Performance and Live Fire

Going into this retro build, I was expecting a raw, no-frills rifle designed to be a workhorse, and the BRN16A2 definitely delivered. Right out of the box, I put about 100 rounds downrange without any added oil. Around that point, I did encounter a minor feeding issue where I had to assist the bolt into battery. After that I generously oil the BCG and upper, no cleaning, and quickly resolved the problem.

Through the next 600-800 rounds, I didn’t clean it at all, just added more oil, and the BRN16A2 ran flawlessly. This upper LOVES to be oiled! The upper felt well-balanced, especially when paired with an Anderson Manufacturing Complete A2 Lower. Being a pretty long rifle, the length and weight managed the minimal recoil of 5.56 rounds effortlessly.

I used both the classic iron sights and a Colt 4×21 optic included in the bundle. The difference between the two really highlighted how far sighting systems have come since the days of the M16A2. The carry handle rear sight is fully adjustable, making it easy to zero and it held that zero throughout testing. As for the Colt optic, I’ll be diving into a full review of that soon so stay tuned for more.

Accuracy-wise, the BRN16A2 performed better than expected. At 100 yards, I was achieving average groupings just under 1.5 MOA, which is pretty impressive. This upper captures the nostalgic feel I was looking for, providing a sense of being transported back in time with each shot while delivering reliable performance.

Price and Value

The Brownells BRN16A2 20″ Upper is priced at $799 for just the upper or $1,049 when bundled with the Colt AR-15 4x21mm scope which is what I chose. When it comes to pricing, you can certainly find cheaper alternatives, but there are also more expensive options out there. I would place the BRN16A2 in the mid-to-high price range for a retro A2 upper, which is fair considering the attention to detail and quality that Brownells delivered.

Am I satisfied with what I received for the price? Absolutely. The upper actually exceeded my expectations, particularly in terms of build quality. The fit and finish are top-notch, and the accuracy and reliability are impressive for a retro-styled upper. To see how it truly stacks up, I’ll need to compare it to a more affordable option. But so far, I believe the BRN16A2 offers great value for those looking for an authentic M16A2 experience.

Overall Rating

Performance & Reliability: 4.6/5

The BRN16A2 performed consistently during testing, with only a minor feeding issue early on that was quickly resolved with lubrication. After that, it ran flawlessly through hundreds of rounds, demonstrating the reliability you’d expect from a well-made upper.

Build Quality: 4.3/5

Brownells paid attention to the small details that make a difference, from the flawless coating to the fit and finish of each part. The overall construction feels solid and durable, living up to the standard of a classic M16A2 while adding a modern touch.

Design: 4.8/5

As a faithful recreation of the M16A2, this upper shines. The fixed A2-style sights, one-piece carry handle, and bayonet lug deliver the exact aesthetic of the original rifle. What’s not to love?

Ergonomics and Handling: 3.6/5

While the classic design has its charm, the ergonomics may feel dated compared to more modern setups. The 20-inch barrel adds weight, making a sling feel more like an essential accessory. It’s true to its roots, but those used to lighter, more adaptable configurations may find it less convenient. But thats the M16A2 for Ya

Value: 4.2/5

With a price of $799 for the upper or $1,049 with the Colt 4×21 scope, the BRN16A2 offers good value for enthusiasts who prioritize authenticity. The build quality and attention to detail justify the cost, and while there are cheaper options out there, this upper offers a balance of nostalgia and performance but may seem steep to some when comparing prices.

Overall Score: 4.3/5
