Design and Build Quality:
The design of the Streamlight TLR-1 is practical, though it can feel a bit bulky compared to some of its competitors. This bulkiness comes from its design, which accommodates two CR123A batteries side by side adding to its width. Despite this, the lightweight construction means that the TLR-1 goes almost unnoticed when mounted on larger firearms when it comes to weight. However, the bulk may be more noticeable when carried inside-the-waistband (IWB) in a holster, potentially affecting comfort.
The housing of the TLR-1 is definitely high quality, providing a sturdy feeling structure. It’s is durable enough to withstand drops and rough handling without any issues, making it a reliable choice for tactical and everyday use.
The switch design is another highlight, offering a smooth and easy reach. One direction provides momentary activation, while the other gives a consistent on/off functionality. This design ensures quick, reliable operation during high-stress situations. Lastly, the mounting clamp is solidly built and operates smoothly, making it easy to attach or detach the light without any hassle. Once secured, the clamp provides a firm, stable hold, ensuring that the light stays put during use.
Performance:
I’ve used the Streamlight TLR-1 on both Glock 19 and Glock 17-sized handguns, and I found that the fit and finish are much better suited to a full-size pistol rather than a compact one. The TLR-1 adds minimal weight, going nearly unnoticed on most firearms, but the width is definitely noticeable especially mounted to a handgun.
Performance-wise, I feel the light excels in clearing and illuminating dark hallways and rooms, making it ideal for indoor environments where close-quarters visibility is crucial. However, for outdoor applications where greater distance is required, the TLR-1 definitely falls short. While it can reach the end of a football field, the beam loses some intensity at that range, leaving you wishing for a bit more power. This becomes especially evident when compared to Streamlight’s smaller TLR-7X, which, despite its size, manages to produce a stronger beam. The TLR-1’s 300-lumen output feels underpowered in certain scenarios, especially given its size and comparing it to others on the market.
To test the runtime, I left the light on continuously and timed it until it died… well dimmed. At around 2 hours and 40 minutes (10 minutes longer than the advertised 2.5 hours) the light dimmed quite a bit. During that first 2 hours the light did get extremely hot but once it dimmed it cooled down. While it dimmed it was definitely still usable till about the 6 hour mark which is when it was very very dim. At that point I deemed it not really do much and stopped my test. Still a very impressive showing, lasting full power past that 2 and a half hour mark but still useable till about that 6 hour mark. I would mark it down as a reliable option for those who need extended use.
Since Streamlight has addressed the TLR-1’s output limitations with the release of the TLR-1 HL, which offers over three times the power of the original model. This updated version seems to be what the TLR-1 needed all along, given its larger size and design. We’ll be doing a head-to-head comparison of the TLR-1 versus the TLR-1 HL in the near future to see how they stack up and if the TLR-1 is even worth being an option with the TLR-1 HL on the market now.

This makes it a trustworthy option for those who need a light that can take a beating in various environments.

The TLR-1 excels in close-quarters environments like dark hallways and rooms, providing clear, bright illumination where it’s needed most. As well as being an awesome option where extended use is necessary over brightness. However, it falls short when used outdoors, especially over longer distances. The beam lacks the power to maintain intensity at a distance, making it less ideal for extended-range applications.
Ergonomics and Controls: 4/5
While the TLR-1 is slightly bulky due to its width, it’s impressively lightweight, making it easy to carry without adding noticeable weight. The controls are intuitive and easy to reach, allowing for quick activation of momentary or constant-on modes during use.
Battery Life: 4.8/5
With a runtime of 2.5 hours, the TLR-1 is reliable during extended use. During testing, the batteries lasted full power for about 2 hours and 40 minutes on continuous use and about 6 hours until deemed useless, which is a testament to its efficiency. This longer-than-expected runtime makes it a dependable choice for those who need consistent light over time.

Priced at around $144 at Optics Planet, the TLR-1 offers great value compared to other tactical lights that can cost upwards of $300. For those looking for a reliable yet affordable option for a full-size pistol, the TLR-1 checks all the boxes, providing solid performance at a competitive price.

The Streamlight TLR-1 is a solid performer in the weapon mounted light market, offering reliable indoor performance with its 300-lumen output and lightweight, robust design. It’s especially effective for clearing rooms and illuminating tight spaces, making it a great choice for home defense and close-quarters scenarios. While it lacks the power for long-distance outdoor use, it makes up for this with a durable build that can withstand tough conditions, reliable waterproofing, and ease of use.
The TLR-1‘s impressive runtime, exceeding its advertised 2.5 hours, adds to its value, making it a trustworthy option when you need consistent illumination. Its design fits better on full-size pistols, offering a balanced feel that complements larger firearms. While the newer TLR-1 HL provides a more powerful beam for those seeking greater range, the original TLR-1 still remains an excellent, budget-friendly option for those looking for a well-rounded tactical light. For the price, it’s hard to find a better combination of quality, reliability, and ease of use.
