Holding the KDS9C Rail for the first time, it feels right, like it was made to be in your hand…. Oh wait it was! The slide is smooth as silk, and the trigger has that ‘just right’ feel to it. I’m seriously pumped to take this beauty out to the range and see what it can really do. Just handling it has me counting the days until my next range session. The quality is undeniable, and if it shoots as good as it looks and feels, we’re in for a treat!

Overall Appearance

I’ve got to say, the overall appearance of the Kimber KDS9C Rail blew me away. Honestly, I can’t think of a single thing I’d change aesthetically. One of the biggest draws for me was, funny enough, the rail itself. It’s not just about the added functionality, which lets us easily slap on a light or a laser, but it also throws in a tactical, modern vibe that the regular KDS9c lacks IMO. This feature really brings the firearm’s appearance together.

Now, about the finish, I went with the dark gray frame combined with the black slide and grip panels. I’ve always had a thing for two-tone firearms, but only certain guns can pull it off without looking tacky. This one? It looks badass especially paired with design elements like the skeletonized hammer and trigger. Which aren’t just for looks, they also help shave off a little weight, which is appreciated on a metal-framed firearm.

The slide itself is a piece of art, tapered edges, serrations across the top that aren’t just functional but add to the KDS9c‘s sleek look. But the real star of the show has to be the barrel. Its stainless finish, flush-cut deep crown, and full fluting looks amazing! Lastly, the grip panels with their crosshatch design are simple yet clean, tying everything together perfectly.

Design and Features of Kimber KDS9C Rail

Slide

The slide of the Kimber KDS9c Rail not only stands out for its design but also its functionality. Made of stainless steel, it features both front and rear serrations that enhance the grip for racking the slide. I’m particularly fond of front serrations because they offer extra leverage and control, especially when an optic is mounted. Additionally, the slide includes a cutout for the rear sight, which is compatible with a variety of Kimbers adapter plates to accommodate different red dot optics. The versatility of their optic plates makes the KDS9C Rail exceptionally adaptable to different red dot preferences and setups.

As for the finish, the slide is coated in Kimber’s KimPro black, which not only gives it a sleek, satin finish but also adds a smooth feel that looks incredible. The durability of this finish is decent, it holds up well against general wear from removing from holsters and occasional brushing up against objects. However, during one of my photo shoots, the gun did tip over onto a rock, resulting in a few small scratchs. It’s a reminder of the risks you take when trying to get that perfect shot. Luckily, a little touch-up with a sharpie made it much less noticeable, now it’s more of a “10-footer” as I like to call it. Where you don’t see the scratch unless you’re really looking for it. But even scratched it still looks amazing!

Talking ergonomics, the grips are fairly slim, adding minimal bulk to the firearm’s profile. This design choice is particularly beneficial for shooters like myself with smaller hands; the grips are about as wide as I would want them without compromising the ability to maintain a secure and comfortable hold. Kimber seems to have nailed the delicate balance between too bulky and too slim, creating grips that accommodate a wide range of hand sizes comfortably. This consideration in grip design ensures that the KDS9C Rail feels great in hand, boosting confidence and control while shooting.

Trigger

The trigger on the Kimber KDS9C Rail showcases a sleek, skeletonized design, which not only enhances its modern aesthetic but also contributes to a slight reduction in weight. On the face of the trigger, there are added serrations that play a crucial role in maintaining consistent finger placement. Those serrations go practically unnoticed while shooting in terms of feel. This is one of those great features that blend seamlessly into the experience, enhancing performance without drawing attention to itself.

Functionally, the trigger feels fantastic. It features a very distinctive wall, which, as you know from my previous reviews, I absolutely love. There’s something about a solid, predictable wall that gives me confidence in my shot. Breaking past this wall leads to a satisfying crisp feel. The trigger sports a commendably short reset that leads quickly to that crisp break. my ideal trigger for handguns have a pull weight in the range of 3.5-4 pounds, and Kimber claims the KDS9C fits right within a 3.5-4.5 pound range, hitting the sweet spot for my preferences. Maybe thats why ive fell right in love with the trigger??

Sights/Holosun 407k

The sight setup on the Kimber KDS9C Rail enhances its versatility and readiness for different preferences right out of the box. It comes standard with an optic cover plate that features a dovetailed rear TruGlo night sight paired with a matching front night sight.

Our model arrived with the Holosun K adapter plate already installed, along with the Holosun 407k red dot sight, which we’ve focused more on during our testing. The adapter plates’ design for the rear sight features a no-dot rear sight, which I found works perfectly fine. But if using irons I do prefer the TruGlo rear night sight which works great! The markings are clear and sharp, making it easy to acquire and line up the front sight quickly upon drawing.

The irons offered with the KDS9C Rail work great however, it’s with the red dot where the KDS9C really shines IMO. I have a strong preference for using the Holosun 407k over the iron sights. The red dot simplifies target acquisition and enhances shooting accuracy. This setup not only complements the firearm’s capabilities but also caters to those who prefer red dots over irons as I do.

Slide Release

The slide release on the Kimber KDS9C Rail is exactly what you want it to be, robust and user-friendly. Kimber really knocked it out of the park with this one. It features a decent-sized ledge, which is a huge plus in my book because nothing is worse than a slide release that’s too thin and digs into your finger when disengaging. With just a flick of my thumb, the slide drops with little effort, and it doesn’t just work well, it feels great doing it. This is one of those features that might seem small but has a massive impact on the functionality and user experience of the firearm.

Magazine Release

Moving on to the magazine release, Kimber continues to show the amount of thought that’s gone into the KDS9C. The button protrudes just enough from the grip to provide that extra leverage needed for quick and easy mag swaps. What’s even better than that is Kimber designed the mag release to be reversible, which accommodates both left and right-handed shooters. The ease of reaching and depressing the mag release makes reloading smooth and nearly effortless, adding to the overall efficient operation of the KDS9C Rail.

Safety

The safety on the KDS9C Rail features an ambidextrous design, another nod to Kimber’s commitment to accommodating both left and right-handed shooters. It has a very firm and solid detent, which ensures that it engages and disengages with a distinct feel, important for preventing accidental disengagement. Additionally, the safety lever is serrated on the top ledge, providing extra grip when you need to quickly disengage it to fire. This setup not only enhances safety but also ensures readiness and ease of use under various situations.

Picatinny Rail

Lastly, let’s talk about the rail, appropriately named, the KDS9C Rail includes a Picatinny rail that extends the firearm’s functionality and aesthetic. As I’ve mentioned before, the rail adds a tactical, modern look to the handgun while also offering the versatility to attach accessories like lights or lasers. This feature allows the user to customize the firearm to fit personal preferences and requirements, truly making it a more adaptable and personalized tool for both EDC and recreational use.

Live Fire Performance of the Kimber KDS9C Rail

From the moment I first took the Kimber KDS9C Rail to the range, I was struck by how well-balanced and smooth it felt in my hands. The first session involved putting about 100-200 rounds through it, and it performed flawlessly, a trend that would continue with this firearm. Initially, I used the iron sights, which functioned well, but I quickly switched to the Holosun 407k. Lately, I’ve been really enjoying the advantages of red dots on pistols, and the 407k has been no exception.

When firing, there’s an undeniable presence of recoil, expected with any handgun, but having that natural higher grip provided by the high undercut on the trigger guard matched with the weight of the full metal frame, the recoil is very manageable. This makes controlling follow-up shots easier, keeping them right on target. The trigger, which breaks around the ideal 3.5 pound mark for me, remains one of my favorite features. It’s smooth, predictable, and has a crisp break with a short reset, which aids in maintaining consistency with follow-up shots.

During the next few range day, I ran a total of about 600-700 rounds through it so far, using various brands of ammunition, and the KDS9C continued to showcase its reliability. There wasn’t a single hiccup, reinforcing my confidence in its performance. The accuracy is exceptional, too. The barrel’s construction contribute to keeping groups tight and consistent, which is exactly what you want in both a range and defensive firearm.

Having spent multiple days at the range with the KDS9C Rail, it’s clear that this handgun is more than just a piece of equipment, it’s a reliable companion.
