The decision to upgrade to Ranger Point Precision furniture and accessories is propelled by a desire to leverage the inherent strengths of the lever-action design, transforming it into a tactical tool poised for modern challenges. This endeavor is not just about aesthetic preference but a strategic choice to enhance the rifle’s ergonomics, balance, and overall functionality.

However, it is paramount to acknowledge that this install presents its unique set of considerations, particularly concerning the caliber of the rifle. The installation process diverges significantly between pistol calibers and non-pistol calibers, primarily due to the variance in the location of the set screw for the magazine tube. Pistol caliber models, like my .44 Magnum, will need the removal of the trigger guard plate as the screw can be found underneath.

Non-pistol calibers, on the other hand, present a different scenario, with the set screw conveniently located under a flat head screw just in front of the trigger plate. Despite these differences, the outcome of improved performance and tactical readiness remains a constant goal.

In this guide, I will walk you through each step of the installation process, while focusing on the pistol caliber rifles. Together, we will navigate through the nuances, share professional insights, and embrace the legacy of lever-action rifles, ensuring that by the end of this guide, your Henry Big Boy X is not just upgraded but transformed.

STOP & THINK ABOUT THIS FOR A MINUTE: THERE IS A HIGH CHANCE THAT YOU MAY DAMAGE YOUR RIFLE WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO DISASSEMBLE IT. UNLIKE OTHERS, THE HENRY RIFLES CAN BE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE THE FACTORY FOREARM, SO WE HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO SEEK EXPERT HELP. IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THE INSTALL YOURSELF, YOU ARE ASSUMING FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR RIFLE AND/OR YOUR NEW RPP HANDGUARD.

Preparation and Safety

Before we dive into the installation process, it’s paramount to emphasize the importance of safety and proper preparation. Handling firearms, especially during modifications, requires meticulous attention to safety protocols to ensure both your well-being and that of those around you.

  1. Ensuring the Firearm is Unloaded:
    • Check the Magazine Tube: Make sure the magazine tube is also clear of any ammunition. Even when you believe a firearm is unloaded, treating it as if it were loaded is a fundamental safety practice.
    • Visually Inspect the Chamber: Open the action of your Henry Big Boy X Model and visually inspect the chamber to confirm that it is empty.
  2. Safe Direction: Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. This is a cardinal rule of firearm safety. Whether you’re inspecting, cleaning, or modifying your firearm, be constantly aware of the muzzle’s direction and ensure it’s pointed where no harm would result if a discharge occurred.
  3. Workspace Preparation: Choose a clean, well-lit, and organized workspace. A cluttered or poorly lit area can lead to accidents or mistakes during the installation process.
  4. Use of Proper Tools: Using the correct tools not only makes the job easier but also safer. Avoid using makeshift or inappropriate tools that can cause damage to your firearm or lead to accidents.
  5. Seeking Professional Assistance: While many firearm enthusiasts enjoy performing their own modifications, it’s crucial to recognize the limits of your expertise. If at any point you feel uncertain about the installation process, consulting a qualified gunsmith is highly recommended. A professional can provide not only the necessary skills and experience but also ensure that your firearm remains safe and functional after modifications.

Remember, safety is not just a practice but a responsibility when handling firearms.

Installation Guide: Ranger Point Precision Handguard and Buttstock on Henry Big Boy X Model

The moment you’ve all been waiting for… It’s Time to install the Ranger Point Precision M-LOK Handguard and Adjustable Buttstock on a Henry Big Boy X Model, particularly for pistol caliber rifles in this guide. Let’s jump right into it!

Remove the Handguard Screws

Start by using a flat blade screwdriver to remove both handguard screws, located on each side of the handguard.

Loosen the Handguard

Using a plastic hammer, hit the sling lug on the front of the handguard sliding it slightly forward. Although it might seem unconventional to use a hammer, this method is effective and should not cause any damage when done properly.

Remove the Front Mag Tube Tenon

Set the front of the barrel on a bench block. Use a hammer to drive out the front mag tube tenon. Make sure you are driving the tenons out toward the ejection port side of the firearm.

Remove the Mag Tube Components

After driving out the tenon, tap the mag tube endcap forward with a hammer. This will remove the end cap along with the follower and inner tube.

Differences Between Pistol & Rifle Calibers

Note the difference here between pistol calibers and rifle calibers. For rifle calibers, the mag tube setscrew is located under a small flat head screw just in front of the trigger gaurd plate on the underside of the receiver. However, for pistol calibers, like the .44 Magnum in my case, the set screw is located under the trigger guard plate.

Remove the Buttstock

Remove the screw for the buttstock, located on the top of the firearm just behind the hammer on the rear of the receiver. The buttstock should slide right off. If it doesn’t, give it a couple of gentle taps with a hammer.

Open the Chamber

Push the lever forward, opening the chamber.

Remove the Lever

Remove the screw for the lever and then remove the lever itself. After the lever is removed push the bolt back forward.

Remove Mainspring Seat

Twist the mainspring seat up and out to relieve the mainspring tension, then remove the mainspring and seat.

Remove the Hammer & Trigger Plate Screws

Using a flat head screw driver remove the hammer screw, followed by the trigger guard plate screw.

Remove the Hammer & Trigger Assembly

After both screws are removed, carefully remove the trigger assembly. (Note: With Henry rifles, you need to remove the hammer with the trigger assembly at once.) Start removing the trigger plate and, while doing so, slightly pull the hammer back just enough to remove it from the receiver along with the trigger assembly.

Access the Mag Tube Set Screw

With the trigger plate out of the way, you can finally see the mag tube set screw. Remove this screw and pull the mag tube out forward from the receiver.

Remove the Handguard

Lightly tap the handguard forward past the second tenon and remove it

Remove Second Tenon

Then, tap that second tenon out the same side as the ejection port.

Install Ranger Point Precision Tenon

Take the supplied Tenon from Ranger Point and in the factory forend tenon slot. Don’t push it all the way down; just get it started. (Note: If the tenon is a very tight fit, you may need to very finely sand down the flat area of the tenon for an easier fit.)

Mate the Mag Tube & Handguard

Insert the mag tube into the slot in the RPP Handguard.

Install the Mag Tube & Handguard

Now guide the tube through the tenon that is started while lining up the end of the tube with the receiver. Leave the RPP Handguard on an angle so you can see both the front and rear tenon for the mag tube. (see picture)

Align and Install the Tenons

Align the front tenon with the slot. With both tenons lined up, use a hammer and brass punch to drive the tenons down into their slots equally until they are both centered.

Reassemble the Mag Tube

Install the inner mag tube and twist, locking it into place. Next, install the mag tube set screw.

Install the Handguard

With both tenons and the mag tube installed, you can now slide the RPP Handguard into position. Line up the two side screws and install the supplied screws, but do not tighten them at this time.

Reinstall the Trigger and Hammer

Guide the hammer through its cutout in the receiver, then guide the trigger assembly into place. Drop the hammer screw into place, ensuring everything is lined up, and get the threads started. Do not fully tighten just yet.

Secure the Trigger Assembly

Reinstall the trigger guard plate screw and secure it. Then, secure the hammer screw.

Reinstall the Mainspring and Seat

To reinstall the mainspring and seat, I like to use a screwdriver with the bit removed. Slide the spring into its position and line the mainspring seat hole with the rod. Using the screwdriver, push forward until the mainspring seat snaps into place.

Reinstall the Lever

Cock your hammer and manually slide the bolt back, opening the chamber. Then guide the lever back into its channel on the bolt. Install the lever screw and secure it.

Finalize the Handguard Installation

With the trigger plate and assembly installed, you can now tighten down the RPP Handguard. First remove the two handguard screws we loosely installed earlier. Apply a drop of low strength thread lock to them and secure them down. Next using the four set screws supplied by Ranger Point Precision, install them so they are just touching the barrel. Then snug down the four handguard evenly tightening them to ensure everything is lined up and secure. Be sure not to over tighten these screws.

Install the Ranger Point Buttstock

Grab your RPP Adjustable Buttstock and slide it over the end of your receiver. Note: Some buttstocks may have a tighter fit and may need a little persuasion with a hammer. In this case, no additional force was needed. Lastly, install and secure the takedown screw.

At this point we have successfully installed the Ranger Point Precision M-LOK Handguard and Adjustable Buttstock on your Henry Big Boy X model. This process not only elevates the functionality and aesthetics of your firearm but also marks your proficiency in customizing lever-action rifles. If you have any other accessories from Ranger Point or other manufacturers like a quiver or M-LOK accessories now is a great time to get those on!

Functions Check

Before you head out to showcase or use your newly upgraded lever action, it’s crucial to perform a comprehensive functionality check. This ensures that all parts are correctly installed and working seamlessly. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Action Smoothness: Cycle the action several times to ensure it operates smoothly without any hiccups or undue resistance.
  2. Trigger Mechanism: Test the trigger pull to verify that it’s functioning correctly. Ensure there’s no obstruction or unusual stiffness.
  3. Magazine Tube and Follower: Check that the magazine tube and follower are properly aligned and feeding correctly.
  4. Screw Tightness: Double-check all screws, especially those on the handguard and buttstock, to ensure they are snug and secure.
  5. Overall Alignment: Inspect the alignment of all installed components, ensuring there are no gaps or misalignments.

so this is the same for the .357 model? What was the brass punch used for?

    1. Danny Lux Avatar

Yes will be tha same for .357! And the brass punch is for any of those stubborn parts that can be stuck and need to be hit a bit harder without being damaged, in our case we didn’t need to use it but it’s there for those that do something’s some rifles will have a tighter fit then others, mainly for the mag tube and tenons on this rifle!
